Mine is the first generation that can say that our understanding of the world and concepts of the forces and direction of society have been shaped not through the literary or the auditory, but the visual, he once said. Born on October 12, 1919 in New York, NY, he studied painting at both the Art Students League and Pratt Institute during the late 1930s. During his time at Pratt, Weiner also photographed portraits of people to earn money and by the 1940s had begun working for a commercial photographer. Inspired by the works of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, the focus of his work became subjects that highlighted socioeconomic problems in both the United States and abroad. Weiner tragically died in a plane crash at the age of 39, on January 26, 1959 near Versailles, KY. Today, the artists works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others.
