Description

Rare early 19th century painting of the Franciscan Convent of san Diego de Alcal, Morelos in Cuautla. This is a very rare view of what the convent looked like in the early to mid 1800s.Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom which looks like R. A. Castaneda and then something else under the name.Written on the back Lungar historico de la Independencia en 1812.I have acquired 2 paintings by this same artist one on wood and one on canvas showing different views of this same ex-convent.Both paintings were unframed at the time of my acquisition. I have cut down and made frames out of some old stock gold frames that I had from years back. I think this material works OK for these paintings. They could easily be re-framed if desired. There are no old paintings listed on-line or in any of my art books that show this particular ConventChurch.A rare glimpse into history. Please view the photos provided to better describe and show the dimensions of this amazing painting. There are some small losses of paint along the edges, scattered, and an area at the center top. The last 2 pictures show what the ex-convent looks like this century. The other painting posted for sale is listed under the antiques category.About the ConventThe Temple and former convent of San Diego is a historical monument located in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico. Its construction dates from the sixteenth century. It is part of the route of convents of Morelos and is one of the most important historical buildings in the state, which is protected by the Law of monuments and archaeological zones of the National Institute of Anthropology and History. It was built by the Dominican order in the 1500s and later, the Franciscans called dieguinos, made more interventions in honor of San Diego around 1640. Apart from its conventual function, it had different uses over the centuries. During the War of Independence it was one of the most important strategic points for the defense of Cuautla. It was the bastion of Hermenegildo Galeana during the Siege imposed by Calleja. Its position in relation to the other monastery forming a defensive axis, made cover for the defense. Later the monastery building became a hotel and then a museum, while the temple and chapel were made into cellars.See all my other great items and art
